It’s Not All About Your Diaphragm

  • The vocal cords regulate airflow pressure.

  • The diaphragm and vocal cords should work together for air balance.

  • Breathy singing will cause you to lose air cvery quickly.

  • Squeezed voices are using too much muscle and not enough air.


How To Fix Loss Of Air Flow

  • Breath low and relaxed. Giant breaths aren’t always needed.

  • Find convenient breath spots in your song and remember and practice them.

  • Running out of oxygen vsrunning out of air are two different things.

  • Maintain an easy speaking posture as much as possible.

  • Only be breathy and airy to show an emotion or vocal styling.


Things That Inhibit Good Breathing

  • Belts, body shapers, jackets & waist accessories might be constricting you.

  • If you have Asthma, Make sure to use an inhaler if prescribed

  • Tight or held in stomachs are you not consucive to correct vocal technique and posture.

  • Feeling rushed or anxious can happen before a performance. Give yourself some wind-down time before yiou perform.

I can't tell you how many voice teachers I've met that claim "singing from the diaphragm" is the key to being a great vocalist. First of all, the diaphragm doesn't make any noise therefore it cannot 'sing'. What we want to concentrate on here is the balance of airflow and vocal cord closure. The vocal cords can only withstand so much airpressure from the diaphragm before things like singing flat, reduction in tone, voice cracking, and more vocal artifacts start happening. The vocal cords love to adduct (come together) and touch (like when you talk); I call that cord closure.  Almost anything beyond that speaking posture will lead to problems; leave the breathiness for stylizing.



Stick out your tongue and say A-A-A (like you're going to say 'at'), and you'll feel the vocal cords come together and vibrate nicely. This is the feeling I am talking about when I say 'vocal cord closure'or singing like you are speaking. Your goal as a vocalist is to master that feeling and be able to keep you vocal cords together from the bottom of the voice to the top. In the mean-time, here are some tips on how to fix your air pressure issues.


Make sure you are breathing nice and low, but remember that giant breaths aren't always needed. Next, print out your lyrics and make notations for places in the song to take a breath and memorize and practice those breath notations. There are some things that can inhibit great breathing like tight constricting clothing and belts, body posture, and holding in your 'natural girth'. It's really important to tailor your clothing or ensemble to account for low breathing. ONE last thing - if you are taking in too much air and not expelling it correctly you will lose OXYGEN which can seem like you are losing air.
