More than half of singers and vocalists have acid indigestion (heartburn) of some form. The symptoms of this issue can range from minor to severe, but even minor indigestion conditions can lead to long term damamge of the voice.  Heartburn is when hydrocolric acid from your stomach travels up your espophagus and sometimes into your mouth and vocal cords. Hiding below the epiglottis are the vocal cords which can easily be effected by the slightest drop of stomach acid. The symptoms of heartburn, can at times, be mistaken for other problems like allergies.

Symptoms of indigestion/heartburn can be excess thick clear mucous coming up after eating or sleeping. Most people will feel a burning in their chest behind their breast bone. Often you'll start to feel a slight sore throat and a hoarse voice that persists from hydrocloric stomach acid dripping onto your vocal cords and throat tissues. Over time this condition can lead to all sorts of vocal problems like lack of vocal cord closure, swollen vocal cords, loss of range, loss of endurance and more. As a singer you need to identify if you are indeed having heartburn or indigestion problems.

Heartburn and acid reflux can become a serious dibilitating issue, thankfully there are many different ways of treating hearburn. There's a list of foods and things to avoid to avoid heartburn like, avoid alcohol, limit caffeine intake, spicy and oily foods. These foods can cause the the muscles that hold contents in your stomach to relax, thus letting the stomach acid leave the stomach and make its wasy into your esophagus and mouth. Try taking a fourteen day over the counter heartburn treatment. Try something that is a stomach "Proton Pump Inhibitor" whick works by turning off some of those acid producing cells. This type of medication has to be taken on a daily basis unlike antacids which are taken several times per day. If all else fails, try my secret method for instant heartburn cure: baking soda + water. Mix 1/2 cup of water with 1/8 tsp of baking soda and mix well. With this simple method you'll have instantaneous relief from indigestion and heartburn.
